CITY OF MALOLOS – The Provincial Government of Bulacan (PGB) headed by Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado and Vice Gov. Daniel R. Fernando showed their support to the Department of Health’s (DOH) campaign against cardiovascular diseases and diabetes during the National Heart Month celebration held at The Pavilion, Hiyas ng Bulacan Convention Center in this city recently.

Anchored on the theme “Mahalin ang Pusong Nagmamahal, Mag–Healthy Lifestyle na!”, the celebration gave focus to the risk factors that greatly contribute to having cardiovascular diseases and diabetes such as physical inactivity, smoking, unhealthy diet and excessive intake of alcohol.

A screening for hypertension and diabetes was held which includes getting the waist circumference measurement and BP measurement of the participants as well as undergoing blood glucose test and recording of WHO/ISH Prediction Chart.

According to Assistant Regional Director Dr. Ruben Siapno of the DOH Regional Office 3, the DOH with the help of its regional offices and the PGB would like to remind everyone to take good care of the heart through healthy lifestyle, physical activity, good nutrition as well as understanding their conditions and underscored that Region 3 is the third region with most the number of cardiovascular diseases and the top region with the most number of diabetes cases.

“Prevention is the most effective way to reduce the rising trend of morbidity and mortality arising from these heart diseases and diseases of the vascular system. And prevention should start early. It should start now,” the assistant regional director said.

For his part, Alvarado said that the growing prevalence of heart disease cases should be attended with urgency.

“Ang buwan ng Pebrero ay hindi lamang buwan ng pagmamahal para sa ating mga kabiyak kundi ito rin ay buwan ng pangangalaga sa ating puso. Hindi lamang dapat ito ngayong buwan pangalagaan kundi araw-araw sapagkat ito ang sentro ng ating buhay,” the governor said.

The celebration is in accordance with Proclamation No. 1096, s. 1973 or the “Declaring the Month of February of every year as Philippine Heart Month”.
