CITY OF MALOLOS – President Benigno S. Aquino III has assured residents of Metro Manila, Bulacan, Rizal and some parts of Cavite of adequate and uninterrupted supply of potable surface water as he led the unveiling of the P3.3 billion water transmission project at the Ipo dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan early this morning.
Accompanied by Bulacan Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado, Asian Development Bank (ADB) Country Director Richard Bolt and Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Administrator Gerry Esquivel, the president inspected the location of the tunnel after viewing the schematic diagram of the Angat Water Transmission Improvement Project (AWTIP).
Aquino said that AWTIP will prioritize the construction of a new tunnel called Tunnel No. 4 from Ipo to Bigte, Norzagaray to provide adequate supply of water and to allow further rehabilitation on the raw water transmission system without any disruption of the water service. It will have a diameter of 4 meters, 6.4 kilometers long and design capacity of 19 cubic meters per second.
He also said that the present water transmission system’s main components are roughly 75 years old, in poor condition, and most likely not compliant with the current structural and seismic requirements.
“Nagkaroon po tayo ng pagsusuri sa Angat-Ipo Dam System partikular na sa tunnels 1-3 at natuklasan natin na ang mga tunnels ay marupok na dahil sa kalumaan, kaya kailangan na itong pagtibayin at ‘yung iba naman ay may tagas na. Maraming tubig ang nasasayang dito na dapat sana ay natatanggap ng ating mga boss,” the chief executive said.
The project which is funded through a loan from ADB will be completed on September 2020 and is expected to ensure sustained and secured water supply for almost 14 million people, in line with the MWSS’s Water Security Legacy Plan.
Meanwhile, Alvarado took the opportunity to thank President Aquino for giving priority to major projects in Bulacan particularly in the problems on water resources.
He also enumerated the water management projects prioritized by Aquino’s administration including the Bulacan Bulk Water Supply Project, the rehabilitation of Bustos Dam, and the dredging of the Marilao-Meycauayan-Obando River System.
Also, being the chairman of the Regional Development Council in Central Luzon, Alvarado requested for the construction of mini reservoirs in some areas of Pampanga to prevent massive flooding during typhoon seasons.
Prior to this, MWSS said that the contract for the design and construction of the AWTIP was awarded after the international competitive bidding was won by the Italy’s Cooperativa Muratori and Cementisti.
