CITY OF MALOLOS – President Benigno Aquino III made certain that Angat Dam, which according to experts is nestling along the West Valley fault line, will withstand a possible 7.2 quake after its rehabilitation as he led the inspection of the Angat Dam and Dyke Strengthening Project in Norzagaray, Bulacan early this morning.

President Aquino announced that the government will set up P1.08 billion for the rehabilitation project and a P261-million flood forecasting and warning system for the water reservoir.

He added that flood control protection worth P292 million will also be implemented.

The president also enumerated the benefits and services provided by the Angat Dam, which are good reasons to start the rehabilitation.

The president also commended the joint efforts of the K-Water, Angat Hydropower Corporation and San Miguel Corporation, the new owners and operators of the dam, with the help of all major government stakeholders including the Department of Energy, National Power Corporation, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System and the Provincial Government of Bulacan.

He also admired the dedication and positivity of Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado in addressing the problems of the province that urged him to respond immediately and take action to the projects that will improve the Filipinos’ life including the bidding of the Bulacan Water Bulk.

According to K-Water President and Chief Executive Officer Choi Gyewoon, the dam-strengthening plan is based on the dam assessment study done by Poyry Energy Ltd., which was focused on the flood and structural safety of it.

The plan aims to raise the impervious core of the main dam by 1.2 meters to substantially improve the overall strength of the dam.

It will also widen the base and downstream slope of the dam and dykes using the rock fill from a nearby quarry used during the original construction of the Angat Dam that will increase its slope from 1:1.40 to 1:1.55 in proportion.

Angat Dam provides 97% of the household water supply to Metro Manila and irrigates 25,000 hectares of farmlands in Bulacan and Pampanga.
