CITY OF MALOLOS - In a bid to actively find Tuberculosis (TB) cases, create awareness, and reduce stigma on people with TB, the Provincial Government of Bulacan implemented "Definitely Free from TB: Screening and Chest X-ray" for its high risk employees and persons deprived of liberty (PDL) in Bahay Tangaw Pag-asa last Thursday at the covered area of Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office in this city.

According to the Provincial Health Office-Public Health who facilitated the activity, they have performed tuberculin skin test (TST) as a method for TB screening and chest x-ray to 133 employees and 85 PDLs.

"Binukas natin ito sa lahat ng mga empleyado ng Kapitolyo at mga nasa loob ng Tanglaw na pwedeng may symptoms o pakiramdam nila na-expose sila. Sa ganitong paraan, nahahanap natin 'yung ibang mga may TB na nagdadalawang isip magpatingin at naiiwasan 'yung hawahan pa," Dr. Jocelyn Gomez, PHO-PH head.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2020 report, the Philippines has the highest TB incidence rate in Asia with 554 cases for every 100,000 Filipinos.

Based on the records of the Department of Health (DOH), because of the pandemic, regular TB services from consultation, testing, to treatment have been limited that resulted in a drastic drop in the number of TB cases notified in the country wherein by the end of 2020, approximately 268,816 new and relapse TB cases were notified to DOH.

It is seen that over 100,000 Filipinos may die of TB in the next five years or 20,000 TB deaths per year if TB services continue to be disrupted.

Governor Daniel R. Fernando is calling out the Bulakenyos that if they feel they were exposed or already showing symptoms of TB to consult a doctor or go to the nearest government hospital where medication for TB is 100 percent free.

TB is caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) and it most often affects the lungs. TB is spread through the air when people with lung TB cough, sneeze or spit. Common symptoms of TB disease include prolonged cough, chest pain, weakness or fatigue, weight loss, fever, and night sweats.

The activity was held in partnership with the DOH, Alay Buhay Party List, Philippine Business for Social Progress and Advancing Client-Centered Care and Expanding Sustainable Services for TB (ACCESS TB).

Meanwhile, Bulacan also joined in the celebration of the Global Handwashing Day 2021 where the province distributed 97 pieces of hygiene kits and conducted lecture/awareness activity on the importance of handwashing and proper handwashing techniques in Bahay Tanglaw Pag-asa juvenile center. ###
