CITY OF MALOLOS - To develop a rabbit industry that is recognized as a major livestock in the Philippines, the Association of Rabbit Meat Producers, Inc. (ARaMP) in collaboration with the Bulacan Agricultural State College (BASC), conducted a two-day program dubbed as the first 1st National Rabbit Congress held at the BASC in Brgy. Pinaod, San Ildefonso, Bulacan from February 27-28, 2020.
With the theme "Rabbit Meat for Health and Livelihood", hundreds of delegates from national agencies and stakeholders from all over the country attended the program, which aims to increase awareness on rabbit production as a source of income and to introduce rabbit meat as an alternative source of protein and good nutrition.
According to ARaMP, Inc. President Artemio C. Veneracion, Jr., their organization will also build a rabbit research center located in BASC to strengthen the rabbit industry.
"Hindi po ako expert sa rabbit industry but through research, mapag-aaralan po nating mabuti iyan. Kaya kanina po, isinagawa natin ang groundbreaking ng Rabbit Research and Development Center that we will establish here in BASC. Not only the BASC will be the center of rabbit industry but the whole province of Bulacan," Veneracion said.
Governor Daniel R. Fernando through Provincial Veterinary Officer Dr. Voltaire Basinang also expressed the willingness of the Provincial Government of Bulacan to support the rabbit industry in the province.
"Batid ko po ang hangarin ng inyong samahan na gawing "Rabbit Capital of the Philippines" ang Bulacan kaya't makakaasa po kayo na buo ang suporta ko sa inyong mga adhikain. Sa ngayon, kailangan nating bigyang kaalaman at kamalayan ang mamamayan sa pagkain ng karne ng kuneho," Basinang said.
Meanwhile, Rodrigo "Jiggy" D. Manicad, one of the program presenters, said that most of the people are uneducated regarding the benefits of eating rabbit meat and as a television host of an agriculture-related television program, he committed to help spread information and awareness to the people.
"Kulang na kulang po sa education ang mga tao na ang rabbit meat po pala ay pwedeng pagkunan ng mataas na protina at magandang uri ng karne. Nakikita ko po na malaki ang potensiyal ng rabbit industry sa export market kaya katulong ninyo po ako sa pag-educate sa mga tao tungkol dito," Manicad said.
As part of the two-day program, a seminar on meat processing will be held today at BASC to be headed by Salve D. Chavez and Analene G. Soliven, resource persons from the Bureau of Animal Industry.
