CITY OF MALOLOS – For the first time, the province of Bulacan, which is known to be the gateway to the north, will be the venue of the 15th National Vegetable Congress and Agro-Industrial Exhibit come November 16-18, 2016.
The three-day congress with the theme, “Moving together towards the attainment of affordable and available food for every Filipino”, will gather some 500 vegetable growers at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium to educate and help them improve vegetable production and consumption in the country.
Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado is thrilled to have the congress in Bulacan and is hopeful that the event will help boost the industry and provide more opportunities and livelihood to Bulakenyos.
Provincial Agriculture Officer Ma. Gloria SF. Carrillo said that the project also aims to formulate and recommend programs, strategies and legislations to strengthen and improve vegetable production chain, consequently establishing food security and sufficiency, and increase per capita consumption of vegetable as a national nutrition improvement initiative.
Carrillo added that during the three-day congress, there will be a farm tour at the East-West Seed Company and Duran Farm on the first day. On the following days, discussions will include Situationer of the Philippine Vegetable Industry, Breeding a New Generation of Vegetable Seeds for Food Sustainability, Seed Technology, New Technologies on Proper Post Harvest Handling on Vegetable in the Philippines, KROPS – Agriculture e-Commerce Made Easy, LGU Efforts in Developing the Local Vegetable Industry and The Daisy Duran Success Story.
“Magandang venue itong vegetable congress para maipakita na ang samahan ng mga maggugulay sa Bulacan ay malakas at ‘yung makita kung paano ina-adapt ng mga magsasaka at maggugulay ang technology at maging halimbawa kung paano maging maunlad. Makatutulong din ito para makahanap ng dagdag na market,” Daisy Duran of the San Ildefonso Vegetable and Palay Growers Multi-Purpose Cooperative said.
The trade and exhibit will formally open on November 17, 2016 where Senator Cynthia A. Villar is expected to grace the event.
On the third day, November 18, after the concluding plenary discussion and presentation of the gathered Congress Resolutions, Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, chairperson of the Committee on Agriculture and Food, will attend as the keynote speaker.
The event is made possible through the cooperation of the Philippine Vegetable Industry Development Board, San Ildefonso Vegetable and Palay Growers Multi-Purpose Cooperative with the Department of Agriculture Region 3 and the Provincial Government of Bulacan.
