CITY OF MALOLOS – The National Nutrition Council (NNC) conferred the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Award to the Provincial Government of Bulacan led by Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado and Vice Gov. Daniel R. Fernando during the National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City, Metro Manila, Tuesday afternoon.

The award was given to local government units that have consistently shown excellent implementation of their local nutrition programs and reduction in the prevalence of under-nutrition for three consecutive years.

Alvarado said that continuous decrease in malnutrition trend over the past three years in Bulacan is a clear proof that the programs and projects implemented are effective, but the province still continues to seek for more doable and demand-driven projects and activities, and recognizes the valuable contribution of the volunteer workers in the delivery of services to all barangays.

“Bagaman maraming relokasyon sa Bulacan at sa kanila kadalasang nakakapagtala ng malnutrisyon hindi natin tinitingnan na problema ang mga informal settler kundi isang hamon. Kahit hindi natin sila kapwa Bulakenyo ay mga kapwa Filipino natin sila at handa ang lalawigan na tumulong sa kanila, hanggang tuluyang mawakasan ang malnutrisyon” Alvarado said.
The province received P500,000 and a plaque of recognition.

According to the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, the past two years has shown the decreasing trend of prevalence rate among severely underweight and underweight pre-school children from 1.63 to 1.56 in 2015 and down to 1.50 in 2016.

Alvarado also expressed his gratitude for the previous awards that the province received in 2016 namely Best Performing Local Government Unit-Cooperative Development Office (provincial level), Seal of Good Local Governance, Quality Management System Certification to ISO 9001:2008 standards, Most Business-Friendly Local Government Unit and 2015 Outstanding Province in the Region in nutrition.

The awarding ceremony is an annual event of the NNC that recognizes outstanding LGUs and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) with effective and efficient implementation of nutrition programs resulting to improved nutrition situation of infants, young children and mothers.

The NNC is the country’s highest policy-making and coordinating body on nutrition.
